What is Epilepsy?

Epilepsy is a disorder in which a person suffers from repeated episodes of seizures.

What is seizure?
In brain there is systematic communication among brain cells, called neurons and electrical current flows orderly among these brain cells. When there is sudden disruption of this communication, there is abnormal spread of electrical activity producing symptoms of seizures.

Not all seizures are alike
Symptoms of seizure vary depending on where the disruption has occurred. For example few seizures may not produce any limb moments or person may not become unconscious may produce slight jerking of a part of body or daydreaming like state.

Warning signs
Some people with epilepsy who have had more than one seizure may be able to detect when a seizure is coming by few warning symptoms. Patient may feel similar abnormal sensation before he/she become unresponsive due to seizure. Examples of this sensation include a feeling of dizziness, lightheadedness, headache, nausea, numbness, pins and needles like sensation, or a strange taste or smell.

What can trigger a seizure?
Different things can trigger seizures in people with epilepsy. Few of the examples are:
  • Missing a dose of medication
  • Missing meals
  • Taking illicit drugs
  • Flashing lights
  • Drinking alcohol
  • Overheating or overexertion (hyperthermiaE
How epilepsy can be treated?

Epilepsy is most often treated with medications known as anti-epileptic drugs or AEDs, which are commonly prescribed by a neurologist. In refractory case of epilepsy Surgery may also help in controlling seizures.

When You Should not ignore your headache ?

Well we all must have experienced headache at least once in our life but some time we should give due importance to headache when any one of following is associated with your headache
  • Is it first or worst headache of life?
  • Is your headache started suddenly without any warning or build-up?
  • Is there any fundamental change in the pattern of recurrent headaches
  • Are you more than 50 years?
  • Are you also having associated condition like presence of cancer, HIV, pregnancy?
  • Are you also having symptoms other than headache?
  • Is your headache started with seizure or syncope or with exertion, sex or Valsalva (squeezing)?
To make the correct diagnosis your doctor will ask certain questions which you should know about your headache like:-
  • What is the location of headache?
  • How did the headache start (e.g. suddenly or slowing becoming worse)
  • What is the quality of headache (e.g. throbbing, pounding, splitting, stabbing, blinding or pressure-like).
  • How severe is your headache?
  • Do you also have symptoms other than headache ?
If you are having recurrent headache you doctor will also ask about:
  • At what age you started having headache?
  • What is frequency of headaches, ( daily or many times in weeks or months)
  • Is there any specific pattern of headache (including any relationship to phase of menstrual cycle)
  • Which factors increase your headache (e.g. head position, time of day, sleep, light, sounds, physical activity, odors, chewing, change in temperature or altitude, noise, smoke, stress, oversleeping
  • What is the usual duration of headache?
  • What symptoms precede your headache?
  • Do you suffer from more than one type of headache?
  • What is response to the previous treatment if taken?

If you are having frequent headaches like migraine, you can keep a headache diary. In you can keep the record of each headache and also the information about the preceding events before each headache and also the response to treatment. It can also help to diagnose and monitor response of particular treatment.

Are you at risk for developing diabetes?

The risk factors for type 1 diabetes are still being researched. However, having a family member with type 1 diabetes slightly increases the risk of developing the disease.

Several risk factors have been associated with type 2 diabetes and include:

  1. Family history of diabetes: Increase risk if a parent or sibling has type 2 diabetes
  2. Overweight: Excess fatty tissue cause leads to insulin resistance.
  3. Unhealthy diet
  4. Physical inactivity: Physical activity helps to control weight, uses up glucose as energy and makes cells more sensitive to insulin.
  5. Increasing age
  6. High blood pressure
  7. Ethnicity: People of certain races — including blacks, Hispanics, American Indians and Asians — are at higher risk
  8. Impaired Glucose Tolerance (IGT)*
  9. History of gestational diabetes
  10. Poor nutrition during pregnancy

*Impaired Glucose Tolerance (IGT) is a category of higher than normal blood glucose, but below the threshold for diagnosing diabetes.

Are you at risk for Stroke or Brain Attack ?

RISK FACTORS FOR STROKE

Many factors increase the risk for stroke. Some factors can be controlled, while others cannot

  • Strokes are four to six times more likely in people with high blood pressure.
  • People with high cholesterol are at double the risk of having a stroke.
  • Strokes are six times more likely to occur in people with heart disease.
  • Excess weight can lead to heart disease and high cholesterol, which can lead to a stroke.
  • Heavy drinking increases the risk for stroke.
  • Smokers have double the risk for stroke as nonsmokers.

STROKE PREVENTION

Healthy diet, exercise, controlling blood pressure and not smoking are cornerstones of stroke prevention
  • Control your blood pressure.
  • Find out if you have heart disease, especially an irregular heartbeat known as atrial fibrillation.
  • Don’t smoke.
  • Find out if you have a diseased carotid artery
  • Lower your cholesterol.
  • Limit your alcohol intake.
  • Control your weight.
  • If you have diabetes, manage the disease.
